The advantages of a good nursing pillow
The nursing pillow is one of the most important items in the kit of the mother-to-be and young mother. It is also known as a maternity pillow or pregnancy pillow. There are many different models and each has its own specificities and uses. Let's take a closer look at this object.
The breastfeeding pillow: a variety of models, a variety of uses
Whether it is sold as a nursing pillow, maternity pillow or pregnancy pillow, this pillow is a great ally for the mother-to-be and the young mother. It looks like a bolster, but it is much more than that. The material and the filling are very important.
The cushion can therefore be used during pregnancy to relieve the pregnant woman of certain ailments specific to her condition. Back pain and the weight of the belly will be alleviated thanks to the use of a maternity cushion. The mother-to-be may choose a longer and more flexible cushion to adapt it to her body shape. It is a good idea to wait until these discomforts occur before buying a maternity pillow. Not all pregnant women will feel the need for one, and there is a risk that unnecessary purchases will be made while expecting a baby.
After the birth of the baby, the cushion has a different purpose, that of facilitating breastfeeding for the young mother. It will then be used to relieve her of the weight of the baby in her arms during feeding time and thus improve the baby's position. Of course, the nursing pillow can also be used to facilitate the feeding of a bottle-fed baby.

Criteria for choosing the best breastfeeding pillow
For the breastfeeding period in particular, it is important to pay attention to certain criteria. The shape, length and firmness of the nursing pillow should be carefully chosen to ensure that it is a perfect ally for the baby's feedings.
The U-shape is particularly interesting to support baby both in front and on the sides depending on the position used during feeding. It allows you to pass in front of the stomach and on the sides of the breastfeeding mother.
An intermediate length should be chosen so that the nursing pillow does not take up too much space and become cumbersome during feeding. A cushion that is too long will be difficult to position because it will tend to go all the way around the mother. Unnecessary lengths will then become awkward, preventing an adequate position.
The firmness of the cushion is perhaps the most important criterion in choosing a good cushion for breastfeeding. If it sags too much (as can be the case with kapok, foam or microbead cushions, which need to be refilled to maintain a suitable firmness), the baby's position will be difficult to maintain in an optimal way. It is particularly important to have a good firmness if the mother has a strong Ejection Reflex (ERF) which can bother the baby. The Mumade cushion, with its inflatable system, guarantees a high and continuous firmness.
This cushion, which you will use on a daily basis, will be in regular contact with your baby's skin (or even his mouth) and with your breast. You should therefore pay particular attention to the materials used to make the nursing pillow, giving preference to natural and certified materials, particularly Oeko-Tex, which guarantees the absence of products that are harmful to health and the environment.
How to use a nursing pillow, some tips
By positioning the nursing pillow in a U-shape, around the belly of the seated mother, it moves from one side to the other. The baby can then be placed in a madonna, reverse madonna, "rugby ball" (or other) position to be in his or her preferred suckling position. The mother will always support her baby with her arm and will not leave him alone on the cushion in order to better adjust the position at the breast and to avoid any possible pain that might occur. To go further, the Leche League proposes an article on breastfeeding equipment. It is the cushion that will relieve the mother's arm.
The nursing pillow can also be used to cushion or secure a baby's nap. However, be careful not to leave it unattended!
We hope that with this initial information you will be able to make an informed choice when buying a nursing pillow. Take the time to assess your real needs before you spend any money. And this little piece of advice is valid for all childcare products.
