Your breast is not a living pacifier!

We often hear this little phrase lightly, almost jokingly, but it can hurt: “Your baby thinks you’re a pacifier.” Behind this lies a misunderstanding of the intense and complex bond between mother and child. The pacifier is a human invention intended to mimic part of the role of the breast. The breast, however, is a multifunctional response: It nourishes, comforts, soothes, and provides reassurance. It does far more than any pacifier could ever replicate.

In this article, I gently but firmly dispel this misconception. As a breastfeeding mother, you are not mistaken for a pacifier. Your baby doesn’t confuse the two. They know exactly who they are talking to: you, their mother, their refuge, their source of warmth and comfort. Let’s restore the breast to its rightful place.

Where does this expression come from?

We’ve all heard this phrase before (at least in France). At a family dinner, from a doctor in a hurry, or in a mothers’ forum: “He thinks you’re a pacifier.” What may seem harmless is actually a misinterpretation of the natural behavior of a breastfed baby.

This notion likely stems from the confusion between nutritive and non-nutritive sucking. The former serves to nourish, the latter to soothe and relax. However, for a breastfed baby, these two functions are intertwined at the breast. There’s no rigid distinction like with a bottle or a pacifier. And that’s precisely the richness of the mother’s breast.

No, your baby won't confuse you with a pacifier.

The pacifier is an imitation. It’s a human attempt to recreate the comforting security of the breast. It was created to soothe, to induce sleep, to work… but there’s nothing human about it. The breast is alive, warm, and fragrant. It breathes, it adapts. It’s unique.

If your baby seeks the breast without necessarily sucking greedily, it’s not because they’re “confused.” It’s because they need you. These needs are fully supported by your smell, your voice, your touch. It’s just such a situation, a mild emotion, an emotional regularity.

The breast is much more than a source of food

Breastfeeding on demand isn’t just about satisfying hunger. It’s also about responding to emotions, fears, and the need for closeness. The breast is multifunctional:

It nourishes (naturally).

It regulates body temperature.

It releases oxytocin, the bonding hormone.

It soothes and lulls to sleep.

It heals (through antibodies, enzymes, and hormones).

It deeply connects mother and baby.

It is an incredibly powerful biological tool. And to reduce it to a “living pacifier” is to completely ignore its richness. Here are five benefits for mothers who choose to breastfeed.

Why this remark can be hurtful

Telling a mother, “He treats you like a pacifier,” implies that she’s being overwhelmed, doesn’t set boundaries, and is being manipulated. Most importantly, it denies the power of the mother-child bond.

This statement often comes from people who don’t understand breastfeeding. It can lead to self-doubt in the mother, making her believe she needs to “set schedules,” “space feedings,” or “stop cuddle-feeding.” However, this advice often contradicts the baby’s needs… and its maternal instincts. And it scares expectant mothers when it comes to choosing a breastfeeding method.

.

Breastfeeding isn’t about being a “pacifier.” It’s about being a present, loving, and attentive mother. It’s about responding to your baby’s needs with kindness and trust. No more clichés. Let’s listen to babies. Let’s trust mothers. There’s still a lot to be done to support mothers!
